Finding activities that provide opportunities for social interaction, as well as fostering a sense of purpose is important to keep us engaged and active as we age. Discovering and doing activities that provide both physical and mental stimulation is important in our everyday lives. We have put together a list of activities and opportunities for the elderly to participate in, in the Geelong Region and in Aged Care Geelong.
Social Groups
Check the City of Greater Geelong Website for activities for positive ageing. There is everything from Ballroom Dancing, Art & Craft Classes, Croquet, Walking groups, Trivia, Country and Western Concerts to the Old Men New Idea group! There is something for everyone! For more details head here and download the current program of Events.
Sports Clubs
There are Sports Clubs catering especially to seniors. If you were for instance join Lawn Bowls, Golf or Squash at Leopold Sporties, you could also stay for lunch or dinner as well! A great opportunity to make new friends. If you join as a member you also can get discounts, accrue loyalty points and can be part of the Members Night Draw! More details here.
There are many other clubs such as the Ocean Grove Bowling Club and Barwon Heads Bowling Club, (both of which Homestyle Aged Care sponsor as well as the Leopold Sporties Club).
Volunteer Opportunities
There are many organisations that are always in need of volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your Community, and to meet some new people. Homestyle Aged Care have an off-site volunteer program running in their Geelong homes collaborating with Our Village (previously Geelong Mums). Lifestyle Co-ordinators at our Aged Care homes collect bundles of clothing and take them back to the homes. The residents sort the clothes into gift packs, that are then taken back to the Geelong warehouse to the be donated to a Geelong mum in need. If you would like to volunteer your time or expertise for Our Village, check details here.
Lifestyle Programs
With a vibrant community, there are a range of activities and programs that are run in Retirement Villages and Aged Care Geelong homes in the Bellarine Peninsula. The programs can assist with interaction, connection and friendships. At Homestyle Aged Care we include exercises, classes, bingo, gardening club, arts and crafts, visiting entertainers and outings to places like the beach, a pub for lunch and much more. It’s a good idea to follow our Social Media to get an idea of the many different activities the residents participate in, and there is something offered in most homes, most days of the week. When you visit Homestyle homes ask to see the Lifestyle calendar to view the experiences and activities on offer coming up. We are also able to adapt the programs to support residents living with mobility challenges or cognitive impairments.
