Sea Views Manor Intergenerational Program

Sea Views Manor recently conducted an intergenerational activity where prep grade students from Star of the Sea Primary School came to visit after 100 days since first starting at their school. These students sang songs for the residents and spent time drawing and colouring in pictures that described what they had been doing in prep since they began in late January. The songs they presented included, ‘If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands’; ‘Hokey Pokey’ and one of their current favourites,’ Baby Shark’ with accompanying actions. To round off their repertoire, they sang with gusto, ‘Shotgun’ by George Ezra that generated great responses from our residents who clapped along with the chorus each time it was sung.

Our residents, not to be outdone, then taught the children some of their favourite songs from when they were young including ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’as well as ‘You made me love you’.They took the opportunity to share the origin and meaning of the words in such songs so that these young learners could better understand what the lyrics referred to before inviting them to join in and sing as one big group or choir.

Not content just to share songs and drawings with one another, the children then listened to recollections of school from two of our centenarians, Keith and Flo, who had not just had 100 days at school themselves but had lived for 100 years and were still going strong.

Glenn, our Lifestyle Coordinator, facilitated a Q & A session, so that all present could learn first -hand how school and life in general had changed over the past 100 years.

Flo& Keith, are pictured here below surrounded by the children as together they sang one of their many common songs.

Being in care at Sea Views Manor means that age is no barrier to fun and enjoyment. Not surprisingly, the children were reluctant to leave and wanted to stay for a longer time than was possible. No doubt, they will be asking to come back in the very near future and our residents will be very glad to see them.
