Point Cook residents and their families were recently treated to its first Family Fun Day, which came about courtesy of the Lions Club of Australia. The Lions Club were keen to organise an event which would provide an opportunity for its members to interact with the elderly residents of Homestyle’s Point Cook home.
The event took place on Saturday August 31 from 1.30 until 3.30pm and included a sausage sizzle fundraiser as well as a visit from Parklands Mobile Farms, which was generously provided by the Lions Club. Posters were made to advertise the event and placed around the home, with residents and their families invited to attend. The event was very well attended by residents, staff and their guests, with a record number of residents said to have attended. The promise of animals was a big drawcard!
Parklands Mobile Farms brought along lots of beautiful animals for everyone to enjoy including ducks, guinea pigs, lambs, rabbits and birds. The animals were placed into the residents’ laps where they were cradled, cuddled and petted by the elders and their family members. One of the staff in attendance also brought along her little pet dog, who joined in the fun and was the source of much delight from those enjoying the afternoon. The sausage sizzle was a huge success with almost 200 sausages sold, raising funds for the Lifestyle Department to assist with the provision of fun, meaningful and stimulating programs.
Sian, one of Homestyle Aged Care’s Lifestyle Coordinators, says the highlight of the event was witnessing so much interaction between all those attending as well as with the animals.
A representative from the Lions Club has said, they were so thrilled at the success of the Family Fun Day they are hoping to make it an annual event.
